Robert Land Academy student Alex M is on his way to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association's (OFSAA) Wrestling Championships to be held in Peterborough, Ontario this March.
Competing in the 67.5 kg category at the 2012 Southern Ontario School Athletic Association (SOSSA) Wrestling Championships on February 22, 2012, Alex won all three of his matches to take the gold medal, earning him a place at the OFSAA Wrestling Championships in Peterborough. His first match was against a tough competitor from Beamsville Secondary School. Alex was taken down for one point in the first 30 seconds of the match. After the referee called both wrestlers to their feet, Alex hit his opponent with a 3 point ankle pick, landing him on his back. Alex pinned his opponent there for the win. His second match was against the Zone 1 Champion from A.N. Meyer Secondary School. Alex has had many tough battles with this young man throughout the season. This day Alex won the first round on a tie breaker 2-2, lost the second round 4-3, and squeaked out a win in the third round with a score of 7-4. This was a nail biter, and Alex’s coaches were concerned that he may lose the match at one point when he found himself on his back nearly being pinned. Alex toughed is way out of the pinning situation to eventually win his second match of the day. In his 3rd and final match Alex wrestled another tough opponent from St. Catharines. Alex won this match in 2 rounds earning him the gold medal in his weight classification.
Aside from earning a place to compete at the OFSAA Championships this March, Alex will also represent Team Ontario at the Canadian 2012 Cadet/Juvenile National Wrestling Championships which will take place in Fredericton, New Brunswick, April 11-15, 2012.
This grade 11 student is in his third year of attendance at Robert Land Academy, a private military school for boys located in Wellandport, Ontario. Well done Alex!
